Toddler & Preschool Testing in Fishers, IN

Early answers for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers, because the earliest years matter most.

Short waits, not months: consult calls within days · intake typically about 2 weeks out · book testing within weeks. Many major hospital systems have much longer waits. See current availability.

When your little one isn't talking, walking, or playing like other kids their age, waiting to see if they'll "grow out of it" feels endless. Hive takes a proactive approach: early identification means earlier support, when it matters most.

Hive is one of the few practices in the area equipped to provide comprehensive testing for children from birth through adolescence. Dr. Kelsey Shively, PhD, HSPP, trained (internship and fellowship) at Nationwide Children's Hospital's Child Development Center, and brings that expertise to families in Fishers, Carmel, Noblesville, Westfield, Zionsville, and greater Indianapolis.

When to consider an early developmental evaluation

  • Late or limited babbling, words, or phrases

  • Not pointing, waving, or responding to their name

  • Delays in sitting, crawling, walking, or using their hands

  • Losing skills they once had

  • Limited interest in people or pretend play

  • A concern raised by your pediatrician, daycare, or preschool

  • Wondering if your child is ready for kindergarten

  • Premature birth or a medical condition that can affect development

Trust your instincts. You know your child best, and asking is never a mistake.

What we evaluate

Every evaluation is play-based and tailored to your child. It may include:

  • Bayley-4 (Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, 4th Edition): early cognitive, language, and motor skills, birth to 42 months

  • WPPSI-IV: cognitive development in preschoolers and young children

  • Bracken School Readiness Assessment (BSRA-4): basic concepts like colors, letters, numbers, shapes, and sizes

  • CELF Preschool: receptive and expressive language

  • ADOS-2 and CARS-2 for autism questions, including a toddler module (more on autism evaluations)

  • Adaptive behavior: everyday communication, social, and self-care skills

  • Behavioral and emotional rating scales

  • A comprehensive written report and 60-minute feedback session with clear next steps

We evaluate for global developmental delay, autism spectrum disorder, language disorders, intellectual developmental disorder, and related concerns, and we'll share your child's strengths, too.

What makes testing a young child different

Young children show what they know through play. We use toys, pictures, and games, follow your child's lead, and take breaks as needed. Parents may stay in the room.

An "off" day is okay. We'll talk about whether what we saw matches what you see at home.

How Hive fits with First Steps and preschool services

Indiana's First Steps program offers early intervention from birth to age 3, and school districts provide preschool special education evaluations for ages 3 to 5. These free services are wonderful resources.

Hive complements them with a medical diagnosis when needed; insurance often requires one to cover speech, occupational, or ABA therapy. We can also go deeper or help you plan for kindergarten.

Frequently asked questions

Is my baby or toddler too young to be evaluated?

No. Hive evaluates children from birth: the Bayley-4 is designed for birth to 42 months, and the ADOS-2 has a toddler module. If you have a concern, it's not too early to ask.

What if my toddler won't cooperate during testing?

That's common and expected. Activities are play-based and matched to your child's level, with breaks. Your observations and rating forms complete the picture.

Should I wait to see if my child catches up?

Some children catch up, but many benefit from early support. An evaluation gives you information now, so you can decide with confidence instead of waiting and wondering.

Do I need a referral from my pediatrician?

No. You can contact us directly. If your pediatrician suggested an evaluation, we'll gladly coordinate with them once you sign a release.

Do you take insurance?

No, but you can pay with a health savings account (HSA) or flexible spending account (FSA). Some insurers reimburse for evaluations, and we can provide a superbill. Some plans require prior authorization, and an insurer may not consider a clinically relevant evaluation medically necessary.

Can an evaluation help with kindergarten readiness?

Yes. A developmental check-up before school shows your child's strengths and where extra support might help, so you and their teachers can plan ahead.

Do I have to bring my child to every appointment?

No. Intake and feedback can be done online with caregivers. Testing is in person at our Fishers office.
