How a private evaluation helps at school

First, a note: IEPs and 504 plans are written, implemented, and governed by your child's school, and Hive doesn't write them. For an IEP, the school's multidisciplinary team (M-Team) completes its own educational evaluation, and the case conference committee (CCC) decides eligibility.

A private evaluation can:

  • Inform the school's evaluation. Schools can often build on our results rather than repeat them.

  • Provide a medical diagnosis (if criteria are met), such as ADHD, autism, or a specific learning disorder. A school evaluation gives an educational classification, not a medical diagnosis.

  • Support your advocacy if your child's needs aren't being met or the school declined to evaluate.

  • Go deeper than school testing in specific areas.

  • Recommend specific accommodations and supports for your child's team.

What we evaluate

Each evaluation is tailored to the referral question and may include:

  • Cognitive/intellectual testing (WISC-V, WPPSI-IV)

  • Academic achievement (WIAT-4, WRAT-5, KeyMath-3, GORT-5)

  • Phonological processing for reading concerns (CTOPP-2)

  • Language (CELF-5)

  • Attention and executive functioning (Conners CPT 3 / K-CPT 2, rating scales)

  • Memory

  • Autism assessment (ADOS-2, CARS-2) when relevant

  • Adaptive behavior and social-emotional/behavioral functioning

  • Parent and teacher rating forms; with your permission, talks with teachers and other providers

  • A comprehensive written report and a 60-minute feedback session

IEP vs. 504 plan: a quick overview

  • IEP (Individualized Education Program): governed by the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and, in Indiana, Article 7. It provides special education and related services for students who qualify under one of 13 disability categories, when the disability affects school performance.

  • 504 plan: governed by Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, a civil rights law. It provides accommodations for students with any disability that limits a major life activity, such as learning. Eligibility is broader than for an IEP.

  • How to request one in Indiana: put your evaluation request in writing to the school. The school must respond within 10 days.

Frequently asked questions

Does Hive write my child's IEP or 504 plan?

No. IEPs and 504 plans are written, implemented, and governed by your child's school. A Hive evaluation can inform the school's evaluation and give the team detailed recommendations, and we're happy to collaborate.

Do schools have to accept a private evaluation?

Schools make their own eligibility decisions and do their own evaluation, but they generally consider outside evaluations you share. Working together, the two can build on each other and reduce repeat testing.

Is one type of evaluation better than the other?

It depends. A school evaluation is free and required for school supports. A private evaluation gives a medical diagnosis insurance accepts for outside services, or a deeper look. Many families benefit from both.

My school said my child doesn't need an evaluation. What can I do?

Schools may decline, even when a parent asks. A private evaluation can help you advocate. Indiana parents can also contact IN*SOURCE, the state's special education parent center, for free guidance.

My child goes to private school. Can you help?

Yes. Private evaluations are a common way to evaluate learning concerns and plan accommodations for private-school students.

Do I need a referral from my pediatrician?

No. You can contact us directly. If your pediatrician suggested an evaluation, we'll gladly coordinate with them once you sign a release.

Do you take insurance?

No, but you can pay with a health savings account (HSA) or flexible spending account (FSA). Some insurers reimburse for evaluations, and we can provide a superbill. Some plans require prior authorization, and an insurer may not consider a clinically relevant evaluation medically necessary.
